Growing up, Kirk’s interest in community work was deeply influenced by his parents, who actively cared for the homeless in downtown Toronto.
Dr. Stewart served 13 years as an Airborne Infantry Officer with the Canadian Army Reserves, instilling discipline, leadership skills, and a strong sense of duty. He simultaneously pursued his studies in Child and Youth Work. His educational journey continued at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Community Welfare, specializing in Youth.
Back in Canada, Kirk took on the role of General Manager for a youth shelter in Toronto, where he significantly impacted those in need. Concurrently, he shared his knowledge and experiences as a professor at Seneca College and Centennial College in the Schools of Community Health and Social Sciences. He also obtained a master’s degree in organizational psychology to reinforce his experience working with non-profits. Driven by a desire to make a broader impact, Kirk transitioned to working as a Restorative Justice Community Worker for Durham Region. Dr. Stewart then embarked on a new path, motivated by his positive impact on and genuine care for youth.
The physicians he collaborated with recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a medical career, which he did in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, completing all his clinical rotations in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Kirk Stewart further honed his skills and knowledge during his residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in the Rural Family Medicine Program, where he focused on comprehensive care. His clinical interests include primary care with obstetrics, community health, and promoting health equity.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Kirk is a talented musician. He plays the bass guitar and drums, finding solace and joy in music. He also engages in physical activities, playing rugby and enjoying long-distance running when weather permits. In his personal life, Kirk is a loving father to six children: two sets of twins and two singletons.
