Frequently asked questions
If you are in a life-threatening situation requiring immediate emergency attention please call 911.
At this time, no doctors are accepting patients. If that situation changes, we’ll post it upfront on the website’s home page. Specialists welcome referrals at their discretion.
Please have your health card and any requisition forms with you at all times. It’s worth checking that you have them before leaving home or the office.
When you arrive for your appointment at Bowmanville Health Centre, go to the reception desk at your destination. Staff will sign you in and invite you to sit in the waiting room. The doctor will see you as soon as they can. They don’t want to keep you waiting. Several doctors work out of the same office, so don’t be alarmed if someone who arrived after you goes in first. Also, your doctor may be engaged in a complicated procedure. The average waiting time is 15 minutes.
We also suggest checking ahead if you are unsure about masking requirements at your destination or elsewhere in the building. We strongly recommend wearing masks or face shields in a medical facility.
You must be registered with a doctor before making an appointment with them. If you are a new patient, you may have been through a “meet and greet,” at which time you reviewed your medical history, family history, current health conditions, medications, and more.
The doctor may prescribe tests to assist with diagnosis at a future time. Exams may include radiology (X-rays, ultrasound, bone densitometry), blood and urine samples or other lab work, endoscopy, cardiac examinations, eye or hearing exams, and more. Various services in the building can fulfil many of these tests. There is no need to go anywhere else. Some require appointments, and some have walk-in availability. If you get results or already have them, bring them to your appointment. Also, bring copies of other doctors’ letters and a list of recent medications or prescriptions. It will help your doctor to help you.
The doctor will discuss your examination results and recommend the proper action.
Durham Radiology Associates provides specific diagnostic imaging but no CT scans or MRIs. All services require a requisition issued by a physician. X-rays do not need an appointment, but please call 905.623.4512 for an ultrasound or bone densitometry appointment. Look for the clinic on the left of the west wing parking lot doors.
Yes. Most doctors see people of all ages. There are two pediatricians accepting referrals.
Certain cases may call for injections for a quick and complete recovery. Doctors or nurse practitioners administer vaccines, anti-inflammatories, steroids and local anesthesia. Various doctors, Bowmanville Urgent Care Clinic and Bowmanville Clinic Pharmacy, hold vaccine clinics periodically throughout the season.
Minor procedures may require local anesthesia or superficial sedation. Offices and clinics will notify you if you need someone to drive you home when complete.
Your doctor may prescribe medication to treat your condition. Please let them know if you have any allergies or other medical conditions. Your history is an essential part of the treatment process. If you have already been taking drugs prescribed by your family doctor, please bring them with you for clarification or to identify potential drug interactions.
Now pharmacists can prescribe for thirteen common conditions. Bowmanville Clinic Pharmacy can help you.
Have your OHIP health card at all times, even if the office already knows you from previous visits. If there are procedures not covered by OHIP and payable by you, the office will advise you of this and request payment before administering them. Many will require cash payments. There is an ATM at the credit union on the south side of King Street, opposite our building.
Yes. There is a $5 flat rate (we don’t time the length of your visit, and there is no ticket on entry) to park in the building parking lot.
